League Match Report Round 5 Adelaide

Firstly I would like to thank all those Eagles supporters that came out to support the lads on Saturday. Whenever you play Adelaide it’s a weird atmosphere and we often have to generate enthusiasm so it was nice to hear our home crowd give the players so much support.

After winning the toss and kicking with a significant breeze it was going to be important to get away to a good start. This occurred for the majority of the term it was just disappointing we were so in- accurate kicking 4-8, but this still gave us a handy 24pt buffer.

Working against the breeze in the second we were going to need to make the most of our opportunities. We won enough ball on the inside but we were wasteful in general play. Generally we over used the handball and didn’t vary the pace of the game. After a solid first half we went to the main break with a handy 11 point lead.

We felt the game was sitting there for the taking, and since we had the advantage of the breeze we needed to act and take the game away from Adelaide. It was a tight quarter with both teams having their moments but we ended up having the better of the scoring winning the quarter by 20 points to give us a 31 point lead at the final break.

The final term was our best for the day, even though we only won it by 14 points the players looked in control. Defensively the players were strong and miserly while going forward we started to find space as the game opened up. Final margin was a solid 45 point win.

Adelaide are a difficult team to play and I am very happy to secure another 2 points but there is no doubt we have plenty to work on. We had patches of indifferent ball movement and at times we were wasteful with the ball in hand so it’s now back to the training track in readiness for a massive few weeks which starts at home this week against the flying Bays.
