Woodville-West Torrens SA's talent pool

07/07/2010

EAGLES SA’s LOCAL TALENT POOL

THE national Under-18’s Championship was recently completed interstate with the South Aussie boys coming agonisingly close to tasting glory for the first time since Russell Ebert’s 1995 outfit.

The Eagles representation at the champs showed the strength of junior football in Adelaide’s west and further boosted the already high reputation Woodville-West Torrens has for developing future League and AFL talent.

Brodie Smith (pictured), who was awarded SA’s MVP award for the champs, Jared Polec, Nathan Bately, Zac Fitzgerald and Jake von Bertouch all played well throughout the national tournament.

Also, Smith and Polec were awarded All-Australian jumpers for their solid form, which you can read about in the Weekly Times Messenger this week.

Back home in the SANFL Under-18 competition, the Maccas Cup, silky-skilled Cameron Sutcliffe won this round’s MVP – the Eagles’ third nomination this year.

Josh Growden and Jarrod Harding are the other two nominees.

More over, the Eagles have 15 AFL-listed players on its 2010 League list and have had more than a dozen juniors drafted in the last decade.

INSIDE THE NEST
LOSS = WIN

JARRAD “Booffa” Wright turned a negative into a very good positive this week.

He locked himself out of his house and had to drive to the Eagles Bar and Bistro to pick up the spare set of keys from his brother, having tea there at the time.

Upon arrival to the EB&B, Wright decided to put a one dollar coin in his pocket from change left over from his new ink on his forearm (for another blog at another time) into a pokie machine, which resulted in free spins and a $500 win.

He left the EB&B, spare keys in hand, with 500 large in his wallet. All in all, a great turnout for the Booffanator.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED

EAGLES’ head trainer Mike “The Guru” Whinnen was tracked down by the Essendon Bombers last week to help run water and provide his engineering expertise to the Bomber players.

Eagles Press Limited understands AFL clubs sometime source interstaters to help out the team when they play away.

Whinnen said the experience was great and he learned a lot about the differing levels of professionalism in the AFL and SANFL, like the amount of staff and support staff and, in general, the people surrounding the players.

Unfortunately Whinnen’s McGyver like qualities couldn’t help the Bombers get over the line.

AND ANOTHER THING

SINCE opening the channels of communication between Inside the Eagles Nest and you, its avid readers, with eaglespress@live.com.au last week the responses have come flooding in...not.

The only response the blog has had in the last week was from a “Mrs Melissa”, who was bequeathing her life’s fortune of $5 million to me for my work in the name of the Lord. All I have to do to get the money is to supply my bank details by reply email.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

9 – The number of possessions Sturt’s John Hinge gathered on the weekend to be judged third best player by the Sunday Mail’s Scott Walsh in the match report (for the record, Sturt’s Tristian Gum, who gathered more than 20 touches, four tackles and four goals didn’t get a mention). Nine is also the number of tubes of shower gel I’ve gone through this season – the boys always forget to bring their own soap. Also John Hinge has nine letters.

2 – The number of tackles Nathan Daniel had on the weekend and also the number of first names he has. Other Eagles players with two first names are Scott Lewis, Brad Graham, Glenn Dawson, Matthew Elliot, James Stewart, Paul Stewart and Bernie Vince. Also, Michael Godden is one of only two players to be drafted at pick 116 in the National Draft– the other was Brendan Bricknell.

82 – The number of marks the Eagles League team had against Sturt on the weekend and also the number of goals Victor A Geue kicked in the 1930 SANFL season to win West Torrens’ leading goal kicker award.

8 – The number of kicks Jared Petrenko (eight letters) had on the weekend and also the number of wins the Eagles League team has had this year. Michael Godden’s coaching opponent this week, also, Nathan Bassett, wore jumper number eight for the Crows. West Torrens finished in 8th position six times in its history.

It’s your blog too

This week and from now on, Eagles fans have a chance to contact Eagles Press Limited.

Either leave a comment about the blog, that week’s match or ask about your favourite Eagle at eaglespress@live.com.au

Go the Eagles.
