Narelle Smith reviews Round 7 vs Glenelg

Round 7 was our second and final look at Glenelg for the minor round this season.  It was territory we haven’t been in before with us sitting top of the ladder and the Bays sitting winless for the season. We were determined not to underestimate the Tigers knowing they would be desperate for a win. We started slowly and they started in a whirl. If not for a late quarter goal via Imogen Trengove we would have had our first Q1 goalless quarter for the season.

From Q2 we took our game to a new level kicking 5 goals in the second quarter. Glenelg scored 2 goals of their own and we held a 14 point lead at the main break.

The last half of the game we took total control of the match and kicked 8 goals over two quarters including Klaudia O’Neill kicking 4 of her own in the last quarter to equal the highest goal kicker in a match in SANFLW History kicking 6 for the match – an outstanding personal achievement for Klaudia who has been building weekly.

Pleasingly we had contribution from all over the ground which culminated in 7 different goal kickers and we fell short by 4 points of obtaining the highest score in SANFLW History but equalled the record for most goals kicked in a game with 14 majors. As a group we are pleased with our ball movement, contest method and how we construct scoring opportunities. We are keen to keep approaching each game with the mindset of not underestimate any team in the SANFLW and we expect to be challenged as the season deepens.

Thank-you to all the supporters who stopped me after the game to express their well wishes and how they are enjoying watching the Eagles SANFLW play our great game. Round 8 sees us head to Coopers Stadium to take on Norwood at 11.50am on Saturday 17th May. The Men’s team have a well-earned bye and it would be great to see our supporters come and see the women’s team play.

See you at the footy.
