Villi’s U18s & U16s Match Report – Round 2

Sponsored by VILLI’S FAMILY BAKERY

UNDER 18s

The Under 18s hosted Sturt at Maughan Thiem KIA Oval on Saturday in Round 2 of the season.

We started very well with some great pressure and we were able to kick some goals early and hold the Blues scoring. This continued in the second quarter and although we gave up a goal on the half time siren we held an eight point lead at half time.

Sturt started to control the ball early in the third quarter and kicked goals to wrest the lead off us – unfortunately we missed a couple of gettable goals but we were still well and truly in the game at three quarter time despite trailing by 16 points.

Again Sturt started the quarter strongly with early goals and again although we battled away and created some opportunities for ourselves, the Blues ran out comfortable winners by 47 points.

Jack Marks again was a strength in our ruck and Hudson Walsh and Seb Cavallaro defended well, Hunter Wellgreen, Zack Lloyd, Harry Scholes and Will Trengove worked hard in our midfield and Lachie Marshall-Bates (1 goal) and Noah Atkinson (2 goals) were competitors up forward for us.

Another Four players debuted for us this week, Hugo Thyer, Jett Thomas, Jed Remphrey (1 goal) and Ron Waters (1 goal) and all four showed us some of their talents through the game.

This week we have South Adelaide on Good Friday at home, starting at 2.10pm.

UNDER 16s

Our first official hit-out for 2026 saw us take on Sturt at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval on Saturday morning, a day conducive for good footy.

We made a strong start, bringing great intent and pressure around the ball, which allowed us to establish a two-goal lead at the first break. However, in the second quarter we were unable to maintain that intensity. Sturt adjusted well and took control, kicking 4.2 to 0.1 to head into the main break with a 13-point advantage.

To our credit, we responded better in the second half, regaining some momentum and evening up the contest. Despite this we couldn’t make the most of our opportunities going forward, finishing with 1.6 for the half and ultimately falling to an 18-point defeat.

Notable performances this week came from Jude Cowan, Mason Papps, Heath Willmott, Campbell Woolford, Max Leys and Lachie Macaitis. With Luke Hunton kicking 2 Goals, Ayden Topp 1 & Hunter Mumford1.

This week we have a short six-day break before returning home to face South Adelaide on Good Friday.
