Villi’s U18s & U16s Match Report

Sponsored by VILLI’S FAMILY BAKERY

UNDER 18s

The Under 18s lost a hard fought game on Saturday, with Central Districts prevailing by 30 points. We started brightly and took a 17 point lead into quarter time after using the wind well. We defended well in the second quarter but the Dogs kicked 2 late goals to take a 4 point lead into half time. In the third we broke even with 2 goals a piece and it was a real contest – set up for a great finish. We battled away well but Centrals had too much forward firepower and took control of the game. It was pleasing to see the boys kept strong at the contest and ran the quarter out well.

We had quite a few good players and Jack Cook was very good across half back continuing a rich vein of form for him. Lachie Lucas and Isaac Edwards did well in our midfield and Griff Hansen gave a great competition in ruck and around the ground. Jevan Phillipou was a threat up forward with 3 goals as well as contributing in our midfield and Dougal Ashby and Rome Burgoyne both worked hard in our defence with Dougal being credited with 16 spoils!.

This week we debuted Hudson Angove and Freddie Wilson and both made good contributions. In the first 6 games this year we have already played 32 players from our squad and with the College football season starting this week we will add to that significantly.

On to this week and we play Norwood at Coopers Stadium on Saturday from 1.50pm.

UNDER 16s

Our ability to pick up the intensity of the game from the start was again missing this week, with Centrals opening up a 28 point break kicking with a slight breeze in the first quarter. Our second quarter was much better in relation to effort & contest with the score line still favouring Centrals by 28 points at Half time.

Whilst our start to the Third quarter was much better and we kicked the opening goal, unfortunately we were unable to sustain it and Centrals kicked the next 6. The last quarter was about playing for some pride in our performance, in which we did by having more scoring shots than Centrals but we were unable to make any in roads to the margin with Centrals going on to win by 65 points.

Tommy Lucas got a taste of U16 SANFL Footy and made his debut for us on the weekend being our 31stplayer to play in the first 5 Rounds.

Our Goal kickers this week, all singles to Hunter Wellgreen, Tommy Lucas, Seb Cavallaro, Jack Leys & Lachie Marshall Bates. With Lachie Marshall Bates playing back, then forward in the second half contributed all day, Jack Leys thru the midfield again found plenty of the Footy, Jack Marks in Ruck, Khye Maddern forward had some good moments with Jensen Frantz & Ben Scheuffele doing some good work in defence.

It is this time of the year that College players go and play College Footy in which we wish them all the best. What this does is provide opportunity for other players to Develop and show their Talents at SANFL level, which is exciting as we look to take on Norwood at the Parade this Saturday.
