A heartbreaking finish saw us fall by two points to North Adelaide at Woodville Oval, with the visitors kicking the winning goal in the final two minutes to claim a 9.4 (58) to 8.8 (56) victory.
For much of the afternoon, we were in control of the contest. Across the first three quarters, we were strong around the contest, owned territory and consistently generated inside 50s, allowing us to build and maintain a lead of around 20 points. Pleasingly, we looked dangerous whenever we were able to move the ball with speed and efficiency, continuing the progress we’ve made in that area over the past month.
The final quarter, however, belonged to North Adelaide. Their intensity around the ball and ability to maintain territory saw them record thirteen inside 50s to our three in the final term. That sustained pressure eventually created enough opportunities for them to overturn the margin and take the lead in the dying stages.
It’s a disappointing result given how much there was to like throughout the first three quarters. We demonstrated the style of football we want to play for long periods, but in challenging conditions, even small lapses in concentration or execution can quickly change the momentum of a game. Our challenge now is to produce that level of consistency across all four quarters.
Kobe Mutch was outstanding in his first game of the season after a long-term injury, showing his quality around the ball and putting himself firmly into consideration for League selection. Adam D’Aloia again thrived in the tough conditions, winning the football both inside and outside the contest, while Tate Delmenico produced another sound performance in defence.
We now look ahead to Sturt at home again next week. With similar conditions expected, maintaining our consistency for the full four quarters will be critical, as games like these are often decided by the smallest of moments.
Go Eagles!!!
