Villi’s U18s & U16s Match Report – Round 4

Sponsored by VILLI’S FAMILY BAKERY

UNDER 18s

The Under 18s had a good win against Norwood on Sunday, winning by 40 points, 16 goals 9 points to 10 goals 5 points.

The win was set up by our very good first 3 quarters. The first quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle with good tackling a feature of both sides, we kicked a late goal to take a 12 pointlead into quarter time.

We played some very good footy in the second quarter and kicked 5 goals whilst holding the Redlegs to just the 1 goal and went into half time with a 40 point lead. Norwood started the third quarter strongly with a couple of goals but we were able to wrestle back the momentum and kicked  4 goals to 2 for the quarter.

In the last quarter Norwood were the stronger side and outscored us by kicking 5 goals to 3 and we ended up back at the half time margin of 40 points.

We had many good players and with 9 individual goal kickers, Jack Cook continued his good form in the midfield, Jack Mumford was a great forward target with 5 goals and Jevan Phillipou, Lachie Sands, Jack Leys were good performers along with Joel Hill who was a very good rebounding defender.

This week we welcomed Jensen Frantz for his first game of under 18 footy and also Jake Hall played his first game for 2025 – both did great jobs for us.

With the gather round bye this week we will focus on getting ready for West Adelaide on Thursday night 17 April at Maughan Time KIA Oval starting at 5.10pm

UNDER 16s

The Under 16s first home game was on Sunday against Norwood.

The first quarter was tight, with both teams running hard forward and threatening the goals.  The Eagles kicked the first goal at the 9-minute mark, through Hensley Bonney-Tucker, and a late goal to Eagle Cash Meyers saw both teams on 2 goals apiece at the break, Norwood ahead by 2 points.

Our boys tackled strongly and showed effort in the second quarter, but we struggled to cope with the work rate and hard running of the Norwood backline and midfield.  It took until the 22nd minute of the second quarter for a goal to be scored, the only one for the quarter, with Norwood taking a 13-point lead into the main break.

Norwood again held sway in the third quarter, kicking 2 goals 6 behinds, and opening up their lead to 29 points.

Led by midfielders Will Lawry (on debut) and Will Trengove, defender Bayden Fenech and forward Cash Meyers (3 goals), the Eagles boys clawed their way back into the game in the last quarter.  Three goals in as many minutes brought the margin down to 12 points at the 19-minute mark, but it was too little too late, Norwood the winners by 14 points.

It was pleasing to see Harry Scholes, Jed Remphrey and Will Lawry make their Under 16 debut, with Cash Meyers kicking 3 goals and singles to Hensley BonneyTucker, Hugo Thyer & Hamish Wildbore

Although the result didn’t go our way, the boys continued to show growth in game understanding and team play.  We’ll be working hard on transitioning to defence and skill execution as we lead into our next game, a night game against West Adelaide on Thursday April 17.
