Sam Jacobs reviews Round 6 League v Glenelg

On Saturday we unfortunately went down to Glenelg by 23 points. A disappointing result as I felt we well prepared to try and get my first win as coach against the Bays, but it wasn’t to be this time.
The first quarter was a scrappy contest from both teams, we were able to dominate field position and the inside 50s whilst they were able to win the ball back and own possession a bit more than we did.
The second quarter was the period where Glenelg were able to get separation on us, both statistically but more importantly on the scoreboard. We broke down in a few key contests but credit to them, if you give these good teams half an opportunity they can make you pay which they did. At half time we were down 24 points.
After a slow start in the 3rd quarter, we were able to wrestle back some scoreboard pressure and also some momentum going into the 3/4-time break. To our boys credit, we started to win more of the ball at stoppage and began to play the game in our half of the ground.
The last quarter we were up for the fight, but again Corey Lyons on this occasion found a classy goal out of stoppage which took a bit of wind out of our sails. The boys continued to fight, and we bought the margin back to an unlikely 16 points, but it was all too little too late.
Better players on the day were Ted Clohesy, who was both strong in the contest but worked hard around the ground. Liam Puncher did a great job on Liam McBean, Joseph Sinor, Max Beattie, Harry Dawkins and Lukas Cooke tried hard in both there respective match ups.
Not ideal losing going into the break, as I want to get rolling again, but also understand its great for the players to have a mental refresher before Port Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval post the bye.

Thanks for your support.

Kieran Sankey reviews Round 6 Reserves vs Glenelg

A disappointing result at home saw Glenelg come away with a 9.9 (63) to 7.4 (46) win.

While we maintained our fight throughout the day and were able to capitalise when we created good opportunities, we simply did not give ourselves enough chances across the course of the match. The biggest difference came in territory, with Glenelg able to generate 20 more inside 50s than us. That made it difficult to build scoreboard pressure and ultimately left us with too much ground to make up.

Credit to Glenelg for the way they were able to maintain territory and continue to apply pressure. Their ability to keep the game in their front half became the difference, particularly late in the contest.

Despite the result, there were still positive signs. When we were able to move the ball with efficiency and give ourselves opportunities, we showed we could make the most of them. Our challenge now is to create more consistency in our ball movement so that we can spend longer periods of the game in control.

Oscar Pearce continued his outstanding form in defence, finishing with 10 effective spoils, many of which allowed us to reset and regain possession. Isaac Niemann produced his best game in the ruck this season, while Ethan Ashley played an important defensive role on one of Glenelg’s key forwards, who had returned from League level the previous week.

We now have the bye to reset and continue working on our ball movement efficiency before we take on Glenelg again in two weeks’ time, ahead of our League clash with Port Adelaide.

Go Eagles!!!
