It was great to finally get our season underway with a quad header at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval which was a great vibe. Leah Cutting playing her 100th game, a massive achievement couple this with 7 debutants in Eagles colours it was set to be a great day.
We started very slow and looked like we hadn’t showed for R1. From a numbers perspective we were well beaten in the first quarter by a determined Sturt outfit who had come to play. We worked our way back in to the game with both sides having no score for Q2. The third quarter we came to life and kicked 3 goals starting with a classic front and centre goal by recruit, Jiarna Zerella.
We would go on to hold Sturt scoreless in the last quarter and missed a few opportunities but didn’t allow Sturt to have 1 inside 50. With a tightly contested tense last couple of minutes we were able to pressure Sturt enough to have a chance to win the game with a kick after the siren. Klaudia O’Neill had a super tough kick which ended up being a behind but we will take the draw and move quickly to our R2 game against West on ANZAC Day.
