Villi’s U18s & U16s Match Report – Round 15

UNDER 18s

The Under 18s recorded a good win against West Adelaide on Saturday winning a free flowing game by 36 points.

It was great to get perfect conditions after a few weeks of wind and rain, and the boys really appreciated it with a great first quarter that set up the win. After giving up the first goal of the match in the first minute we then kicked 7 goals 3 points to take a commanding 38-point lead at quarter time. We ran the ball well and attacked the goal face relentlessly.

The Bloods regrouped and hit back hard during the second quarter and outscored us kicking 3 goals 2 points to our 1 goal 2 points and the margin was reduced to 26 points at half time.

Once again, we took control of the footy and the match in the third quarter and kicked another 5 goals whilst our defence worked hard to hold West goal less.

After establishing a good lead of 55 points at three quarter time, once again West Adelaide hit back with some good ball winning and movement and outscored us by 19 points holding us goal less for the quarter. In the end the 36 point win was a good result.

Quite a few players contributed all day to the win and Romario Clemente, Connor Rugari and Hunter Rowe were really strong in our midfield, Lachie Marshall-Bates continued his good form with 4 goals up forward, ably assisted by his tall partner in Jack Marks (2 goals) and our defence was led well by Mitch Harris (11 marks, 9 intercepts, 1 goal) ) along with Jayden Groom, Jensen Frantz and Logan Hughes.

With a competition bye this weekend we will set our sights on the top team Central Districts at home from 12.20pm on Saturday 1st of August.

UNDER 16s

Round 15 saw us back at home taking on 3rd placed West Adelaide.

We started well kicking the first two goals of the game. In which the first half was a high-quality affair with both sides applying high pressure and moving the ball from end to end.

Defensively our team stood up to the challenge early being able to restrict West Adelaides ball movement and at Half time scores we went into the main break with a 1 point lead.

The second half was played in pretty much the same manner but a few moments of intensity and structure allowed West Adelaide a bit more time with the footy in hand and as any quality side at this level will make you pay on the scoreboard.

Unfortunately, West were able to kick 3 goals to 9 in the second half running out 38-point winners.

Better players include: Hunter Mumford, Damien Wanganeen, Walker Hart, Clayton Kemp, Mason Papps & Jake Malaycha.

Goal kickers: Jimmy Burton 2, Archie Marshall 2 and singles to Walker Hart, Ryder Dunlop, Mason Papps & Damien Wanganeen.

Whilst the result didn’t go our way the coaching group has been really pleased with how the players are developing and learning week to week. With 3 rounds left to play after the bye this week, hopefully the group is able to finish on a high with a few more positive results.
